It's almost back to school time! 📓✂️🖍✏️
CMHCM School Based Services Supervisor, Hollie, addresses the importance of positive self esteem in a recent issue of Clare County Cleaver.
In Clare and Gladwin County, local survey results suggest that 30% of youth identified having a positive self esteem; this is an 18% drop ⬇ from 2013. Here are some quick easy suggestions to help your teen improve their self esteem:
1. Be consistent. If you say you’re going to do it, do it.
2. Use their name when speaking to them.
3. Give them specific praise. Instead of just saying “good job” tell them exactly what they did that was good.
4. Give safe options.
5. Listen to understand and not to respond.
6. Don’t compare your experience as a youth to theirs. Listen to their experiences and validate them.
7. Help to reframe their thinking.
8. Model healthy ways of coping and allow them
to see adults feeling and coping in healthy ways.
9. Spend two minutes talking about the things
they like to do and asking questions from curiosity.
10. Spend time doing things with them they like to do, and don’t be afraid to try new things!
